Social Scaffolding engages new and diverse audiences with dynamic, socially engaged, interactive and immersive art. We make connections and build community through creativity and conversation, promoting the wellbeing of our participants and ourselves.

Working as a collective provides artists with opportunities for professional development and mutual support so together we can work more effectively with our audiences.

We aim for our work to be accessible for all ages & abilities.

Our History

Social Scaffolding is a collective formed by three emerging artists, Lou Baker, Juliet Duckworth, and Alyson Minkley. We’re all recent graduates of Bath Spa University and residents of Emerge, the graduate incubation programme, supported by the University Careers Team.

We each have our own distinctive practice and use different materials and processes but we recognise links in our work. We started working as a collective in September 2022, facilitating two successful pilot exhibitions, one in an empty shop in Taunton town centre, and the other at Bath Spa’s Sion Hill campus.

Pop-up venues attracted non-traditional audiences from passers-by, widening arts participation and our tour increased footfall in empty high streets, a catalyst for regeneration. In our pilots, invited sessions for targeted community groups and young people complimented an open-door policy, enabling a wide range of visitors to be creative, embodying their stories and feelings in the artworks.
